My last post described how amazing our feet are why we need to look after them and giving us a good quality of life. This blog will be focussing on the how we can keep our feet healthy and reduce the risks of us getting foot pain or foot related issues. Remember that these are all tips and tricks that are simple and doing them consistently should go a long way, but don’t stick to them rigidly, for example if you want to wear those high heels for that night out once in a while, DO IT, just don’t wear them all the time!
One last point to stress is that these should REDUCE the risk of foot related issues, you may still get some. If you do have any foot pain, foot related issues in the Barnstaple, Braunton or Bideford areas that may need professional help then get in contact for an appointment by ringing us or booking online here
So here our some simple easy to do footcare tips:
1) Get to know your feet
When there is something different about our faces, like a spot coming up we notice it straight away, This is obvious as we see our faces multiple times a day in a mirror or reflections. Unfortunately, as our feet are hidden away in socks and shoes the same cant be said for our feet. But we don’t have to check them multiple times a day, just a daily quick check. That means that If there is anything different about them, it can be investigated and sorted much quicker. Struggle to see your feet, in particular the soles? Simple, just use a mirror or get someone you live with to do it for you.

2) Moisturise your feet
A good way to check your feet is to moisturise them daily. Moisturising your feet helps keep your skin hydrated, this keeps the skin not only looking good but prevents the skin from potentially cracking or even splitting which can cause issues such as pain. A question we get asked a lot is “What cream should I use?”, I answer this with the best cream is the one you will actually use. The market is saturated with creams and they have different qualities which some people will like while others will hate. Just one last thing, DON’T moisturise between the toes.
3) Wear sensible footwear
Make sure you wear sensible, supportive footwear most of the time, different people and different feet appreciate different types of shoes, that is very individual. But make sure you buy and wear footwear that is robust, has some sort of fastening around the midfoot (Laces being the obvious one) that will secure the shoe around your foot to help reduce tripping and stop feet “clawing” to feel secure. Lastly having a roomy toe box, to reduce friction and make sure you can spread your toes and feel comfortable is key.
4) Get footwear that fits well!
As important as what the footwear is, you need to make sure that it actually fits. People need to stop thinking about what size they are, and just use that as a guide. Different manufacturers means sizes will be slightly different. If it feels tight, then try a bigger size, especially as our feet get bigger as we get older. A big issue we see is the width of shoes, so make sure the footwear is wide enough but not too long if you go for bigger sizes, you only want about half a cm between your toes and the end of the shoe.
5) Change up what you put on your feet!
Our feet have 250,000 sweat glands, so they sweat a lot- about half a pint a day. Its vital that you change socks at least once a day, a sweaty, moist humid atmosphere is one that fungal spores can thrive in and grow. The same is applicable to your shoes if you wear the same ones every day. Also, the materials in shoes such as EVA need a “rest”, so they can provide the best possible support.
